‘The Lawyer’ have published their feature on the Top 20 Cases of 2023, which recognises the leading matters going through the courts in the forthcoming year. One member of 18 St John Street Chambers Business and Property Department acts in a case named as one of the Top 20. Three more members act in cases which are to be heard at the same time as the lead case that appears in the list.

Following the liquidation of Carillion plc in 2018, the Secretary of State seeks to disqualify eight of Carillion’s former Board members from acting as directors. The proceedings concern the financial reporting and market announcements of Carillion plc before its collapse.
Jennifer Newstead Taylor is one of the junior counsel acting for the Secretary of State, instructed by Sally Dallow and Emma Parsons of Womble Bond Dickinson (UK) LLP. Mark Cunningham KC Maitland Chambers, David Mohyuddin KC, Radcliffe Chambers, Anna Lintner, 39 Essex Chambers, Ben Archer, 4 New Square Chambers, and Isabel Petrie, Selborne Chambers complete the legal team. This is set to be one of the largest and highest profile cases ever brought under the Company Directors Disqualification Act 1986 and is listed for 25 weeks in October 2023.
Richard Chapman KC and David Hoffman (instructed by Neil Stockdale & Erich Kurtz of Hugh James Solicitors) act for the Claimant in Why Not Bar and Lounge Limited v Zenith Insurance PLC & QIC Europe Limited and Neil Fawcett (instructed by Luiz Costa of Fletcher Day Solicitors) acts for the Claimant in Mayfair Banqueting Ltd t/a Maddox Club v AXA Insurance. These are business interruption insurance test cases listed to be heard at the same time as other cases including the lead case named by The Lawyer, The London International Exhibition Centre v Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance. The cases relate to business interruption insurance claims following restrictions and closures imposed as a result of Covid-19 and raise important issues about, amongst other things, “at the premises” clauses.
