18 St John Street’s Betsy Hindle acted on behalf of the defendant in a recent trial concerning allegations of assault by penetration and sexual assault. Unanimous not guilty verdicts were returned following the three-day trial at Liverpool Crown Court.
The prosecution alleged that, during the course of a night at one of His Majesty’s Prisons, the defendant sexually abused a fellow female inmate while both women were serving custodial sentences.
The case involved vulnerable witnesses whose evidence was pre-recorded in advance of trial. Prior to the cross-examination, Betsy Hindle successfully advanced a legal argument permitting questioning on sensitive matters that would otherwise have been excluded. She subsequently conducted the cross-examination of the complainant, employing the specialist advocacy skills required to challenge their account effectively in the context of serious sexual offence proceedings.

Betsy was instructed by Michael Graham of Forresters Solicitors.
