During her criminal pupillage under the supervision of Mr Daniel Calder, Emily has been exposed to an extensive variety of criminal hearings and trials in both the Magistrates, Youth and Crown Court. Emily has honed her client care skills when developing relationships with clients and witnesses. Emily has drafted a wide range of legal documents including skeleton arguments, advices, and sentencing notes.
Emily has also developed her written and oral advocacy attending courses where she was required to deliver a plea in mitigation and conduct advocacy within a fictional trial.
Prior to commencing pupillage, Emily worked as a paralegal at Mary Monson Solicitors, a criminal defence firm. Within this role, Emily managed a busy caseload of police station, Magistrates, and Crown Court work, working effectively with police officers, reviewing lawyers at the Crown Prosecution Service, and counsel. She drafted defence statements and other legal documents on behalf of her clients, including those that were vulnerable.
Emily analysed voluminous amounts of evidence and independently conducted client conferences, taking instructions, and advising on the strengths of the prosecution case. Emily also represented clients at police station interviews, advising clients on the strength of the police investigation against them, and the most appropriate interview tactic.
Emily was often the first person that those facing a criminal prosecution spoke to and was able to calmly guide them through the process and ease their distress. This role strongly developed her interpersonal skills and written and oral advocacy.
During University, Emily placed first and second place in three advocacy competitions, leading to her being selected from her student cohort to receive the award for ‘Outstanding Contribution to Advocacy.’
Emily is a keen advocate for others. She has volunteered for Citizens Advice Service and Advocate; the Bar’s National Pro Bono Charity. Whilst volunteering within this role, she reviewed numerous case files, identifying further documents required to progress the cases of vulnerable litigants in person.
Whilst at University, Emily also led English teaching sessions to refugees and volunteered for ‘Alzheimer’s Society’, assisting those suffering with Alzheimer’s disease and their family members with the process of appointing lasting power of attorneys.
