SENSITIVE ADVOCACY: ACQUITTAL SECURED IN COMPLEX YOUTH COURT TRIAL

3rd Jul 2025

Verity Quaite recently represented a defendant who was acquitted after trial in the Youth Court. The defendant, a young man with significant vulnerabilities, had been accused of multiple rapes.

This case demanded a meticulous and sensitive approach from all involved. The presence of multiple parties with complex communication needs, each supported by intermediaries, meant that every aspect of the process — from police interview to trial — required exceptional care, patience and specialist understanding.

Verity’s sensitivity, tenacity, and commitment to the principles of fairness and justice supported the defendant through this difficult process.

This was not a straightforward case. There were difficult and emotive issues at its heart, made all the more complex by the unique needs of those involved.

Cases such as this serve as a reminder of the critical importance of experienced youth justice practitioners who are not only legally astute, but also acutely aware of the broader human context in which these cases sit.

Verity was instructed by Tim Chapman of Yates Ardern Ltd.
